|Neil and Cathy Howard|
|We have just been named as one of ten dark horse wineries by James Halliday. This accolade is awarded to wineries who have excelled over the past 12 months and have been awarded a 5 star rating for the first time. 5 Stars are awarded to outstanding wineries capable of producing wines of very high quality.Take a road less travelled, visit our new cellar door and discover a hidden gem – a 5 Star Winery owned and operated by Cathy and Neil Howard. The couple have been growing grapes and making wine for a collective 45 years.Whicher Ridge is a genuine small wine producer, handcrafting small quantities of single variety, single vineyard, single region wines.
Wines produced are from three wine regions: Geographe, Margaret River and the Great Southern. So a journey to Whicher Ridge will take you on a journey of discovery of these three highly renowned Western Australian wine regions.
When you visit, you will experience a tasting with Cathy, a winemaker with over 20 years of experience – A truly unique experience as very few cellar doors offer you the opportunity to have a tasting with the winemaker!
“We welcome you to our farm, our home and our passion – which is growing grapes and making great wines.
Enjoy a FREE tasting of our wines while looking out onto the grapevines in front of our cellar door. Our winery is right next door, so it’s very easy to show you both our vineyard and our winery during your visit. We also welcome group bookings and “Behind the Scenes Tours” walking through the winemaking process from vine to glass, upon prior arrangement.
To enhance your experience, there is a selection of gourmet farmhouse pantry products and farm grown produce (including free range eggs) available for you to purchase.
So what makes our vineyard site so special? It has to do with our location. We are on the same latitude as Juniper Estate and Vasse Felix, so we share similar soils as the highly acclaimed Wilyabrup sub region of Margaret River. But we are at an elevation of 170 metres above sea level, which means that the cool winds at night coming off the Southern Ocean during summer, give rise to wines of great flavour intensity and finesse.
We grow sauvignon blanc, viognier and cabernet sauvignon on our vineyard. We source grapes for our riesling and shiraz from a vineyard in Frankland River (An area in the Great Southern wine region), and grapes for our chardonnay from a vineyard in Margaret River.
We manage our farm in a biologically sustainable way, using minimal chemical inputs. We make compost using all of our winery waste, as well as our garden green waste, and this is spread back onto the vineyard and across the farm to enhance the health of our soils.
The development of a wine sensory garden has commenced and once complete, our visitors will enjoy a very unique food and wine experience”.
