Ten Willow Bridge Estate wines have been awarded medals at the Perth Royal Wine Show to earn the winery the title of Most Successful Exhibitor processing less than 300 tonnes.
The Dardanup winery took home the trophy for Best Dry Red Wine Blend for its Dragonfly Cabernet Merlot (2010), which also earnt a gold medal.
Silver medals were awarded for the Dragonfly Sauvignon Blanc Semillon (2011), Dragonfly Rose (2011), Dragonfly Shiraz (2009) and the Dragonfly Shiraz (2010) while bronze was awarded to the Dragonfly Chardonnay (2011), Dragonfly Sauvignon Blanc Semillon (2010), Fume´ Sauvignon Blanc (2010), Solana Tempranillo (2010) and Gravel Pit Shiraz (2010).
Elated at the success, Willow Bridge Estate senior winemaker Simon Burnell said it was the winery’s best result at a wine show.
‘‘Almost all of the wines we make won a medal of some sort,’’ Mr Burnell said.
‘‘Willow Bridge has had some very good wine show success in the past, but nothing on this scale.’’
Mr Burnell said the key to creating an award-winning cabernet merlot was to use fresh, sweet fruit to deliver a wine ripe with tannins.
‘‘A good cabernet merlot blend is rich but not heavy, with really luscious, sweet fruit and ripe tannins — that’s one thing that really stood out about our wines,’’ Mr Burnell said.
One of the bigger wineries in the Geographe Wine Region, Mr Burnell said the wins recognised the entire region because grapes from different wineries often went into blends.
