Opening is a dream realised for winemaker

from the South Western Times 12/01/12

The official opening of a cellar door and restaurant at the Smallwater Estate on Saturday night fulfilled a dream for owner John Small that he would have a place to showcase wines from his boutique vineyard.

“After having won many awards and medals for our wines and having many requests if we have a cellar door and restaurant, we decided to take the plunge and  build one to showcase our wines, as well as the beautiful property, with vineyard and marron ponds and dams,” Mr Small said.

“We not only grow the grapes that go into the wines we make, but will also be proving marron grown on the property in the menu.”

Mr Small said the opening night had been a very successful event, the feedback had been encouraging and he already had bookings for the restaurant.

The cellar door also has a small licensed outdoor garden area which has been made family friendly with a cubbyhouse and swings.

Mr Small said the estate would be initially open Friday to Monday from 11am to 5pm, catering for lunches and also taking bookings for group events and functions.

“It is set high on the property, the views are sensational when sitting on the jarrah bush pole deck overlooking acres of water with the vines coming near to the water’s edge” he said

“Situated 10 minutes east of Donnybrook, just before Kirup, in Newlands, it is well worth the drive to experience the fine wines and food that Smallwater Estate can offer – just look for the signs.”
